Body Double 39
FILM – brice dellsperger with the participation of françois chaignaud
presentation

A short-movie by Brice Dellsperger (from Dead Ringers by David Cronenberg), shot in 2023

Body Double 39 can be seen as a three-channel video installation. The video alludes to David Cronenberg’s psychological thriller Dead Ringers (1988). Twin brothers Elliot and Beverly (Jeremy Irons in a double role in the original) work as gynecologists in a Toronto fertility clinic. Despite their very different temperaments, they regularly swap roles in both their professional and private lives. In Body Double 39, the twins’ fragile equilibrium is jeopardized and transformed into drama by the appearance of Cary. The twins play with mirror masks, while Cary’s role is interpreted differently on each of the three screens (Jean Biche, Francois Chaignaud, GinGin Mezzanotte). This gives rise to a multifaceted interweaving of real and imagined space, while the three shifting protagonists allow a structural analysis of the scene and the dynamics of the relationship through slight differences in their representation. Body Double 39 transforms this scene into a silent film scene, changing the soundtrack to Seeland (1975) by the Krautrock band NEU! The 4-minute narration is repeated 3 times on the 12-minute loop, each time with slightly different editing.
